Best Bunk Beds With Stairs: Safe for Children and Toddlers

Bunk beds with stairs offer a great space-saving solution while still giving your children a bit of space to call their own. Aside from that, some of the best bunk beds with stairs can offer hours of endless amusement as well.

There is nothing better than a bottom bunk bed to provide a secure fort that you can defend from all invaders. Or maybe a castle for a princess to live in. Maybe your kids will be able to captain their own pirate ship or be climbing a mountain.

The only limit will be their own imaginations and, of course, some basic rules so that they understand how to play on the bunk beds safely.

I know, rules are boring but your kids do need to understand that there are safety aspects to consider here as well. Like how they should NOT dive off the bunk bed and try to fly.

But How Do I Choose the Best Bunk Bed to Buy?

You would think that a bunk bed would be very much like the next. You would be wrong. There are options that have ladders, options that have stairs, those with railings and without railings, those with a double bed at the bottom, etc.

There are a lot of options to choose from, and it can be quite bewildering. A staircase bunk bed for kids, for example, takes up a little more room than one with a ladder, but it is easier for little kids to get up and down safely.

At the end of the day, the staircase is the better option if you have smaller kids – it is safer and gives them more scope to play as well. And, who knows, maybe later on the steps can be used somewhere else too.

In this article, I will go through the top options in this area, so you know where to start looking. I won’t stop there, though. I will also go through what you need to consider before you choose and what the advantages and disadvantages of each type are.

To start off with, here are some things to think about before choosing the model that you are going to take home yourself.

  • Consider your budget carefully. You want something that will last well, especially when it comes to boisterous kids. You do not want to choose the cheapest only to find that it caves in because they have been playing on it, do you?
  • How versatile is the configuration? Are the levels permanently joined or can they be taken apart? This may not be important right away, but what happens when your kids are older and get their own bedrooms?
  • Headroom is between the two levels? Now, while we don’t want our little kids too high off the ground, we also need to consider that we will have to reach into the bottom bunk at some time. Can you fit comfortably when sitting on the bed or do you have to bend forward? If the latter, story time might be uncomfortable.
  • How close to the ceiling is the top? If your child sits up suddenly in bed, are they going to bump against the ceiling? If the room has a ceiling fan, how accessible is it from the top? Kids climb like little monkeys, remember.
  • Is a trundle bed included as well? This can be quite useful if you have people or your kid’s friends sleeping over. A trundle bed is a bed that fits in underneath your standard bed and can be rolled out when required.
  • Is there any storage space? A trundle is a nice to have but so is storage underneath. You will need to decide which is most important to you. (Models with storage are pricier, but you can always find a toybox or baskets to put there instead.
  • Are there secure, removable rails? I wouldn’t want my toddler sleeping high up knowing that he could roll out of bed. The rails on top should be secure. At the same time, if you plan to split the set sometime, you will need to remove them.
  • Maintenance at a later stage. What kind of work will you need to do down the line if you keep it for a long time? Will you need to repaint it or reapply varnish?
  • How easy will it be to keep it clean? Kids are messy. Is the surface easy to hose down or wipe off? How likely is it to get stained? What kind of cleaning supplies can you use on it?
  • What thickness of mattress can you use? It makes sense to want to get a thicker mattress because that means better comfort, right? But what you have to consider is the height of the rails. If the mattress is higher than the rails, the child could roll out.
  • What type of mattress can you use? It pays to remember that if you have a bed with slats, you will need a thicker type of mattress, a Buckie board, or a box spring option to help your child sleep more comfortably.
  • A quality mattress is a better investment. We are all usually so focused on the best bunk bed itself that we forget about the mattress. A cheap foam mattress is not such a bad thing when it comes to a smaller child – with their weight; they don’t need as much padding. But too thin could mean that they put their feet through the slats.
  • A mattress protector. This is something that is a good idea for everyone to consider. It protects the mattress and helps prolong its life. If you have a child that is being toilet-trained, it is an idea to get a waterproof option.
  • A mattress-topper. These can help to make a mattress more comfortable for an older child. With a small child, care should be taken with these because they could accidentally smother themselves.
  • Consider the size of the bed in terms of bedding as well. You can get what is known as a Twin Extra Large. This is a longer version of the standard twin mattress. But just be aware that bedding will be harder to find then.

How to Choose the Best Bed for a Toddler

Now that you have an idea of what choices there are out there, what do you need to consider specifically when buying the best toddler bunk beds with stairs? In this section, we will look at the kinds of things to consider when you have younger children in particular.

1. The height of the lower bunk

When looking at best bunk beds with stairs for kids, we are quick to consider how easily a child can climb up and down the ladder or steps. What we often forget about is whether or not it is easy enough for them to get into the lower bunk.

A younger child should always be on the lower level, even if there are railings in place. They might get up during the night; they might scramble over the railings and fall and hurt themselves.

At the same time, though, they do also need to be able to get in and out of bed easily enough. The higher the bunk is, the more difficult this will be for them to do.

A good solution is to find a sturdy box or step that they can use to give themselves a leg up.

2. The finish

Toddlers, especially when they are teething, are likely to chew or suck on anything that takes their fancy. That is why it is vital to ensure that any finishes used on the unit are non-toxic in nature.

You also want something that is easier to clean. Some of your child’s artwork you will want to keep, but not when it is on your furniture. A surface that can easily be wiped down is your best option here.

3. Something they can grow with

If you have a toddler, a twin bed is something that will save a lot of space in the room. However, do be prepared to replace it when they start to get taller. Don’t get me wrong, you will still get a good few years of usage out of a twin, but they are still shorter in length.

It is also worth keeping that in mind if you might have visitors over. While this won’t be a problem when children are visiting, it could be an issue if you have adults over.

You will have to weigh up the savings in terms of space and money now versus the extra expense at a later stage.

4. Easily accessible

One thing to keep in mind when it comes to choosing the right solution for your toddler is that you want something that allows you easy access to them. Whether for the reasons of changing a nappy, comforting them, or lulling them to sleep at night, the height of the bed from the floor and the amount of space between each bunk must be taken into account carefully.

The bunk being closer to the floor makes it easier for your child to climb in and out of but it can make it more difficult for you if you need to pick them up or play with them.

5. Open toy spaces

One thing that I do tend to look for is open spaces for toys. I want these to be within reach of my toddler without them needing to climb much to get them. My kids all needed little encouragement to climb, and a favorite toy just out of reach was a recipe for disaster.

Being able to store their toys where they can see them and get to them without scaling the walls is a great help and saves a lot of headaches and potential injuries.

I do prefer open spaces for storing toys to drawers for the simple reason that small kids might inadvertently slam fingers shut in drawers.

6. Safety

With small kids, your first priority should be their safety. Check the finish – is it smooth and scratch-free? Or are there nails sticking out that might snag their hair or rip their skin?

The railings should always be higher than the mattress in case they roll over in their sleep, especially if they are on the top bunk.

If they are sleeping on the bottom and keep rolling out, it might be a good idea to get yourself a common-variety pool noodle. Slip this under the fitted sheet after they have climbed into bed. It is not a strong barrier, but it does help to keep them in the bed because it provides a guideline.

The next thing to consider is how slippery the steps are. Steps are a better option to ladders because they are a lot more solid. If polished to perfection, however, they could be just as dangerous.

Non-slip strips, if not already included with your purchase, are a great way to deal with this issue. It also pays to keep the slipping issue in mind when cleaning. Furniture polish is an excellent way to keep up the shine but will also make things a lot more slippery.

It might be better just to regularly wipe the wood down with a clean cloth.

Our Final Thoughts

Okay, so now you understand more about the range of options that are out there for you. Were you surprised at all the different combinations available? I know that I was. Staircase bunk beds for kids are a great space-saver, but there is no question that they are an investment.

Fortunately, if you make the right choice, they are an investment that will pay off in the long-term.

The options that we have gone through here today may not be the cheapest that you will find. But the reason that we chose them is simple – they offer excellent value. They are all built to last, and most have clever and useful design features.

We have also considered what will look good in your home. All that is left for you now is to choose the best option for your own family.
