Mattress Sizes and Dimensions

The size of your mattress could be the difference between a relaxing night and a restless one. The right size of bed and mattress gives you enough space to relax your body comfortably. It should also not be too big for your room.

There is not universal mattress size that satisfies everyone’s needs. Even as an individual, the appropriate size for you will differ with your current circumstances. You will, for instance, need a different mattress size when you sleep alone and when you are sleeping with another person, a baby or a pet.

Mattress Sizes Chart

Twin mattress - 39'' X 74''

Also known as a “single” mattress, a twin mattress is the smallest mattress available after the crib size mattress. It measures 39 inches by 75 inches and its width is the smallest that an adult can sleep in comfortably.

The twin mattress is most appropriate for children and single adults. The mattress might, however, be too short for tall adults. They are the ideal mattresses for use in children's rooms, trundle units, and daybeds.

Twin XL mattress - 39'' X 80''

At 39 inches by 80 inches, twin XL mattresses are the longer version of twin mattresses. The extra length allows them to accommodate the taller adolescents and adults that cannot fit in a twin mattress. They, however, retain the twin mattress’s slim width thus saving on space. They are ideal for dorm rooms and guest bedrooms.

Full mattress - 54'' X 74''

Also known as double mattresses, full mattresses have a width of 54 inches and length of 75 inches. The extra width of the full mattress provides you much more space to rest in comfortably compared to the twin-size mattresses.

The additional width, however, is not sufficient to accommodate an extra person. It is just enough for an adult seeping alone.

Full mattresses are the least common mattresses and are often used in spare bedrooms.

Queen mattress - 60'' X 80''

The queen size mattresses measures 60 inches in width and 80 inches in length. It provides ample sleeping space without filling the average bedroom. Couples that like sleeping close to each other, taller adults, and growing children will find the queen mattress great. This size is currently the most popular mattress size.

King mattress - 76'' X 80''

The king size mattresses is the wider version of the queen mattress. It measures 76 inches by 80 inches. Divided by two, the width is an equivalent of a twin mattress. As such, the king mattress offers enough sleeping space for two sleepers and thus ideal for couples.

There is also enough extra space to accommodate a baby or pet. It is the second popular mattress after the queen mattress.

California king mattress - 72'' X 84''

California king size mattresses, also referred to as the “western king”, measure 72 inches in width and 84 inches in length. They are four inches longer but also four inches slimmer than the king mattress.

These mattresses are the best choice for adjustable beds because even when the head or foot are elevated the length is maintained.
